Gary is a native
of California, the first child of three born to Richard and Mary. The
Randall family began in El Segundo, and eventually took root in Thousand
Oaks. As a child he was fascinated by the numerous western movie sets
(Rifleman, Gunsmoke) located near his home, and would spend countless
hours playing "cowboy" or "movie director" while playing in and about
the facades. Gary also developed skills in puppetry, magic, and ventriloquism,
however, movies were always his first love.
At sixteen, he joined The Conejo Players, a local community theater and
began acting in small roles, and building scenery on the weekend. After
much pleading, he was allowed to design his first show, which gathered
much praise from local theater reviews. At this time he also began working
at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire - a part time job that lasted ten years.
Gary was given an opportunity to work in "the movies" as a set lighting
technician in his late teens, and worked on over fifty feature films and
television shows, including as gaffer on the Ridley Scott classic "Bladerunner".
During this period, he took night classes at Art Center School of Design,
art directed small videos, and designed sets for Equity Waiver Theater.
Frustrated by not earning a living by doing what he really wanted to do,
he turned to a friend- production designer J. Michael Riva who replied
,"why don't you stop being an electrician and go be an art director"!
As luck would have it, two weeks later while at a social function, Gary
met a producer who worked for Roger Corman's New Horizon Pictures. With
a leap of faith he quit the "big time" union TV series he was working
as a dimmer operator, and art directed reshoots for a B movie. That job
for the "King of the Bs" led to over ten feature films at New Horizon,
over a two year period.
Now in the twelth year of his career, Gary has production designed and
art directed over ninety features, television shows, commercials, and
theater projects. He has done work for Showtime, HBO, Alanis Morrisette,
Dr. Ruth, Dennis Miller and Ringo Star. He
has worked in most of the Southwestern states, the Caribbean, and China
and has won many awards for his designs.
